Description

Tasting Notes:

This Doolhof Signature Merlot 2012 has a beautiful deep crimson hue. Unmistakable aromas of blackberries, cassis and ripe plums seduce the nose while also showing gentle whiffs of cedar. Full bodied and complex, this wine has a juicy mouth-feel, with mineral tones evident in the background. The palate is layered with plush fruit, dark chocolate and supported by firm tannins that lead to a luscious and persistent finish.

Doolhof Wine Estate at a glance...

Doolhof means labyrinth in Afrikaans. In Greek mythology, the Labyrinth was an elaborate structure constructed for King Minos, designed to hold the Minotaur, a creature that was half man and half bull and who was eventually killed by Theseus. Daedalus made the labyrinth so cunningly that he himself could barely escape it after he built it.

When Settlers first set sight on this magical valley in the early 18th Century they noted the many hills and vales and aptly named it Doolhof.

Today, this labyrinthine topography is harmonised with the positioning of Doolhof’s vineyards, making good use of the many micro-climates and terroirs which are ultimately expressed in the wine.

Doolhof’s modern facilities, quality grape production, modern viticulturist methods and award winning wines ensure its place in the 21st century.

The farm has been the jewel of the Bovlei valley for three centuries and has had many owners. The current farm dates from 1993 with the decision to grow high quality wine grapes. The first vines were planted in 1995. Since the present owners acquired it in 2003, they have built a winery, tasting room and storage complex. In 2005, the farm was given Estate status.

The Estate lies between Bain’s Kloof and the Groenberg Mountain Range. This landscape is blessed with unique and varied terroirs. The micro climates, growing conditions and soil types make it ideal for growing wine grapes, resulting in soils that are finer, more balanced and deeper than in the surrounding countryside with clay content that is evenly distributed. A combination of Malmesbury shale, homogenize Glenrosa and Clovelly soils guarantee that the roots are able to descend to four meters or beyond.

Roughly 40 of the farm’s 380 hectares are planted to vine. Soils, growing conditions and micro-climates vary considerably across this large expanse (which reaches up into Bain’s Kloof), and each grape varietal is faithfully wedded to its ideal terroir. Two white varietals, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, are grown, with a substantial number of reds. They include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz. The white varietals are planted on the eastern slopes of the Groenberg, which allow the grapes cooler days and less direct sunlight. The late sunrise and early sunset also allow for a longer ripening process, enhancing the elegance of the award winning wines.

The Doolhof Tasting Room The understated elegance of the cool, air conditioned, blue and white Tasting Room at Doolhof Wine Estate provides the perfect foil to display our award winning wines. It is situated in the original wagon house built in the late 19th century and, with light flowing in from its large windows and doors, invites guests to linger awhile to taste and purchase superb wines. A private tasting area situated at the end of the long room can be reserved for groups of six people. The service includes a tasting of seven or eight wines by Doolhof’s wine maker.
