Reach For A Dream at a glance...

For 30 years, the Reach For A Dream Foundation has been dedicated to making dreams come true for children fighting life-threatening illnesses. The aim of the Foundation is to give each child hope and encouragement. We bring joy and laughter to their difficult situation and help them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for.

These children between the ages of 3 and 18 years have used their dreams to fight illnesses such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, kidney failure, blood disorders and heart conditions. We encourage these children to dream their greatest dreams, which the Foundation goes to incredible lengths to fulfill. Reach For A Dream fulfills an average of 1500 dreams a year and dreams normally fall into one of the following categories:

1. A dream to meet someone famous or their role model eg meeting Lewis Hamilton
2. A dream to go somewhere or to see an amazing place eg Table Mountain
3. A dream to become somebody eg a scientist for a day
4. A dream to have a special experience eg to ride in a Ferrari
5. A dream to have or to own something eg a bicycle or dolls

In addition to fulfilling individual dreams, we have projects where we work with groups of ill children and their families. These national projects, which allow us to reach over 42,000 children a year, include Family Focus, Captain Courage, Queen for a Day, Camp Sunshine and the Jabulani Kingdom.

Do you remember your childhood?

Playing with your friends, playing ball games, playing hide and seek?

Dreaming of what you would be when you grew up?

Remember dreaming of the home you would build, the family you would raise?

In South Africa today, there are thousands of children, whose only dream is to have a childhood without pain, but sadly, because of their medical condition, they are bedridden or wheelchair-bound and many of them may never reach adulthood.

At Reach For A Dream, every day is spent working with children between the ages of 3 and 18 who are fighting life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer, cystic fibrosis, heart conditions and renal failure, to name a few. We strive to fulfill the dreams of these children across South Africa.

When a child is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness they, as well as their family, are placed under enormous psychological, financial, and emotional stress. RFAD seeks to alleviate the strain that a life-threatening illness takes on the children and their families by providing them with an opportunity to realize their dream. These young children are under extreme pressure to deal with serious medical issues and are in desperate need of encouragement. At RFAD we believe in the power of inspiring hope, particularly for a child who has been told that they may not have much longer to live.

For us at Reach for a Dream, the most important motivator is to make the dream a truly memorable and magical experience.

By making dreams come true RFAD enriches children’s lives, we offer each child a magical moment to regain their childhood that is being lost to illness.

The process of dream fulfillment begins with a visit to the dream child at the location where the child is being cared for. Once a doctor has verified that the child meets the criteria for dream fulfillment, the dream assessment process begins.

Firstly the nature of the child’s dream is determined, through a session of play-therapy. This occurs during a play-therapy session, when trying to learn as much about the child as possible so as to ensure that dream fulfillment is tailored to the child’s preference, personality, and interests, as closely as possible.
Then the child identifies three dreams. We require three, as our ability to fulfill dreams depends largely on funds and resources available. If we are not able to fulfill a particular dream, or if a dream is deemed unsuitable for the child by the doctor, parent or guardian we can select another dream from the list.
Dreams regularly fall into one of the following categories:
A dream to meet someone – a sportsperson, a TV personality
A dream to go or see – a visit to Robben Island, to see the ocean
A dream to become – a ballerina, a radio DJ
A dream to have – a bicycle, a bedroom makeover
Once permission has been granted by the doctor, we take the child, together with their family, out of their normal surroundings, to fulfill their dream. Anyone can contribute to a dream for a child fighting a life-threatening illness. The fulfillment of these dreams has the positive effect of inspiring hope and courage in the dreamer and helps them believe that tomorrow is worth fighting for. Help to inspire our children and give them hope – One dream at a time – Do it through Reach For A Dream
