Esse Organic Skincare
Esse is passionate about skin science. They take a broad, holistic approach in their quest to defy ageing. By closely examining every aspect of skin health and the external factors affecting it, Esse can carefully select ingredients to extract synergies that reduce the impact of time.
Esse Organic Skincare at a glance...
Work for Esse began in 2000 with research into the active properties of Kigelia africana. Through determination – and the naivety of a scientist trying to start a business, Esse was born in 2002.
It has always been Esse’s desire to bring the best actives to skincare without compromising on safety or ethics.
Esse means ‘to be’ in Latin. Our vision is for a beautiful, indefinitely sustainable life for all species.
Most people associate probiotics (good microbes) with maintaining a healthy gut, but new research is revealing that synergistic microbes are also fundamentally linked to skin health. The Human Microbiome Project has discovered that optimal skin health is dependent on the presence of trillions of microbes living on, and in, your skin. We have invested considerable research to ensure that our products maintain a balance of microbes to slow the ageing process. We aim to create an environment on the skin that favours the growth of beneficial microbes so that they can out-compete pro-ageing species. To do this, we use prebiotics to selectively feed good microbes and have included probiotic microbes in some products to deliver specific results. Your skin is a complex ecosystem. You need your microbes – so don’t try to kill them with anti-microbials unless absolutely necessary. You will disrupt your skin’s sensitive ecosystem and open the door to harmful pathogens.
We are passionate about the ongoing exploration into new ways of treating skin. Our products are created or amended as a result of advances in science and we don’t follow fashion. We believe that nature offers us all that we need to produce the most effective skincare products in the world. Our unwavering belief in nature has resulted in a fierce desire to protect our natural resources. South Africa is home to almost a quarter of the world’s plant species and we have chosen the best of Africa’s plants to deliver potent new actives in our products. Our ingredients include Baobab, Kalahari Melon, Kigelia and Marula. These plants are wild-harvested to maximise the potency of the extracts.
Since our inception in 2002, we have remained true to our core principles: – we’re certified organic, vegan and cruelty free and we support fair trade. We’re also a carbon neutral company. PhytoTrade Africa oversees the sustainability of our wild-harvested ingredients and ensures that the rural communities that gather plants are paid fair trade rates. We believe that mindful products are a step towards an indefinitely sustainable, richly varied and beautiful future. We hope that you share our long-term view on skin care.
Our bodies are incredibly efficient at dealing with the wide range of chemicals that we would naturally encounter on the surface of earth.
We can use the natural chemicals in plants to give us energy and we have developed ways to process and excrete the chemicals that we don’t need. There are new chemicals though, man-made chemicals, that we have no mechanisms to deal with.
These chemicals often cause sensitisation in skin and can result in long-term health risks.
Organic products are synthetic and chemical free and are better for you and the planet.
It shouldn’t be surprising that synthetic chemicals are more likely to cause sensitivity in skin or have long-term health risks.
Using organic products means that you will not be exposed to synthetic chemicals that could have unwanted side effects. Conventional vegetable oils are often adulterated with cheaper petrochemical oils or low-grade mass produced oils.
They often contain residues of pesticides and other agrochemicals. These chemicals are oil soluble and thus concentrated in the oil that is pressed from the plant.
Organic farming uses natural techniques to combat pests and the oil that is pressed from plants grown in this way is free of contamination with agrochemicals.
Using an organic vegetable oil, as opposed to petrochemical oil (like mineral oil), has tremendous benefits for your skin. Vegetable oil mostly contains fatty acids that can be freely absorbed into the skin and incorporated into cell membranes or used by cells for other purposes.
By improving the structure of the skin these oils slow down Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) and ensure that the skin stays hydrated and moisturised.
Petrochemical oils, however, can’t be used by cells and can’t penetrate the skin unless aided by other chemical agents. These oils slow down Trans Epidermal Water Loss by forming an occlusive layer on the surface of the skin.
Esse uses cold pressed vegetable oils with lipids that closely resemble that of the sebum in the stratum corneum. We are mostly concerned with giving skin the ingredients that it needs to keep it healthy. Only once this is achieved can we focus on slowing the ageing process.
Another benefit is that organic farming is more sustainable and tries not to support the petrochemical industry that has been responsible for a large portion of the global environmental damage over the last century.
