De Grendel at a glance...
Using the principles of Feng Shui, De Grendel’s cellar has been magnificently designed and decorated to blend the old with the new. Dramatic windows act as spy holes into the manufacturing process and into the vast cellar itself where the barrels are stored. The cellar combines the heritage of the Graaff family history at De Grendel, with a new era in winemaking and wine tasting
The farm has been in the Graaff family for three generations. Baronet, Sir David Graaff, retired politician and leading wine farmer, continues the legacy left by his father and grandfather before him. The historic De Grendel farm remains the heart and soul of the Graaff family, whose roots on the property go back five generations. Sir David has built a reputation for upliftment in the community, supporting farm laborers and their families and encouraging education for their children.
Charles Hopkins, Cellar Master
Charles Hopkins is the inaugural winemaker and one of South Africa’s most highly regarded winemakers both in the country and abroad. He is also a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild. His list of successes and awards includes numerous double golds at the Veritas Awards. He studied Cellar Technology at Elsenburg Agricultural College and has worked in California, his beloved Bordeaux, and a number of well-known South African farms.
Elegant Dining On A Working Farm
In a way it’s like dining with the Graaffs. The elegant, airy dining spaces blend the present with touches of De Grendel’s past. The warmth of wood, old family photographs and other symbols of the Graaff family history combines with contemporary elements. A unique design feature is the glass-walled kitchen with its wrap-around views. Diners can watch the kitchen brigade at work, when not drinking in the vistas of vineyards, the working farm and Table Mountain.
Open For Lunch And Dinner
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. At dinner the exceptional 6-8 course tasting menu (tailored to diner preferences) is a huge draw card, offering the chance to experience the talents and creative abilities of the chefs over more courses. De Grendel wines are on the menu at cellar door prices, making this fine dining experience accessible at realistic prices.
Perfect For Private Events
De Grendel Restaurant is the perfect setting for private events, smaller weddings, special celebrations and corporate events. A Chef’s Table is hosted in an impressive room next to wine barrels in the cellar.
